MNQUMA Local Municipality recently bade farewell to Councilor Gandi Guqaza, who died earlier in the month of March 2019, after a short illness. Councilor Guqaza was serving on the municipal council as a PR Councilor for the Economic Freedom Fighters.

The life and times of Councilor Guqaza, who joined the Mnquma Council in 2016, shortly after the last Local Government Elections, were celebrated through a memorial service jointly organised by his political party and the Office of the Speaker Councilor Thobeka Bikitsha.

The event, which was held at the Msobomvu Community Hall on March 6, was attended by scores of mourners from across the political spectrum.

He was described as a hardworking, dedicated and humble politician who always went the extra mile in service of his community. Community Services Portfolio Head, Councilor Zola Layiti saluted her late colleague for his service to the people of Mnquma Local Municipality. "I remember him as a very humble person. He loved unity even during difficult times and he always stood for the truth,” she said.

Guqaza, who also worked as a policeman in his earlier days, was given a fitting send-off as mourners belted out revolutionary songs between speakers. His son Xolisile Guqaza, conveyed his words of appreciation to the municipality for the dignity and sensitivity with which his father’s passing had been handled. "We thank the municipality for sharing our grief.

The municipality has always been willing to assist wherever we needed help. We are truly grateful ", he said.Councilor Ndyebo Skelenge said he was saddened by the passing of his friend and colleague."It is a sad thing to lose a valued member of Council such as Councilor but let us accept his death as the plan of the Almighty God,” he said.
