Heritage Sites
Battle of Centane Heroes Monument
Centane was the site of the Battle of Centane on 7 February 1878 during the Ninth Frontier War. A Gcaleka force led by Khiva and Sigcawu attacked British troops from the south, resulting in over 300 Xhosa deaths and only two British casualties.
Rev. Tiyo Soga’s Monument
Tiyo Soga was the first African ordained as a minister in the Presbyterian Church in South Africa. Born in Gwali in 1829, during Chief Maqoma’s expulsion from the Kat River area, he died on 12 August 1871. His grave is at the Tutura Uniting Presbyterian Church in Centane, Eastern Cape.
